GMC Training Plans
Olathe Medical Center Women's Triathlon
If you've been considering trying a triathlon, this race is the perfect place to start!
The Olathe Medical Center Women's Triathlon is short, well-organized, and nearby, which makes it the perfect race for first-timers! Whether you're already physically fit or just getting started on your journey to good health, this race is within your reach.
How far is it?
Each segment of this race is manageable for the beginning or aspiring triathlete. The 500 meter swim is equivalent to 10 laps (20 lengths) in our pool. For most new swimmers, this will take 10-15 minutes. And you can definitely handle working out for 10-15 minutes!
The bike course is 10.6 miles, which is probably a little less ground than you would cover in a Group Ride or G-Cycle class. And you can handle a cycling class, can't you?
The race ends with a 2.6 mile run, which is roughly equivalent to 30 laps around our indoor track. 30 is a big number, but you could walk and run for 30 laps, couldn't you?
How can I get help?
You should start by signing up at the front desk and picking up a free training plan. Then start following the training plan, switching workouts around if you need to (although you'll do the best with the schedule if you maintain the correct amount of rest days between workouts). Incorporate strength, core, and flexibility work as appropriate.
If you really want some help, or if you want to take your racing to the next level, contact Jamie Morton for information on joining the Multisport Club for the third (and final) semester of the year. Masters Swimming (group swimming workout) meets twice a week--once at Rock Road, once at West Central--for a coached swim workout. Cost for Masters Swimming is $15/month. Private coaching and swim lessons are also available for the truly competitive (and the truly nervous).
How much will it cost?
The race entry fee is $50 (you must also buy a one-day $10 USA Triathlon membership if you're not a USAT member). Training is free! All the workouts on the training plan are free workouts. If you'd like to include some of the Genesis Multisport Club workouts (swimming, cycling, track), each coached workout entails an additional $10 fee. Cost to join the Multisport Club (which means you can attend any of the workouts) is $180 for the July-September session (works out to about $15/week). Masters Swimming is $15 per month. Equipment can be purchased at your discretion.
Speaking of equipment, what do I need?
Basic needs for a triathlon are goggles, bike, and running shoes. If you don't have a bike, borrow one! Mountain bikes, single-speed cruisers, hybrid cruisers, commuter bikes, and old-school, rusted-out 10 speeds are all acceptable forms of triathlon transportation. Goggles can be purchased at any sporting goods store, or at D & J Sports (on West St, just north of Central on the west side of the road). I hope you already have a pair of workout shoes, but if you need to get a new pair, you can check at any sporting goods store or at First Gear (on Douglas, just west of Washington) if you want to get all fancy about it.
You also need an outfit for working out and racing. Bike shorts and a sports bra are acceptable. Running shorts and a T shirt are acceptable. Even a swimsuit is acceptable. I advise that you wear something relatively form-fitting, however, as loose clothing is going to flap all over you in the swim and bike.
I'm still scared! What do I do?
Call me, for heavens sake! I'm here to help!
