Yoga and Back Pain

Yoga is not a competitive sport: You have nothing to prove, and there is no gain to be found in pain. Honor your body, with all of its idiosyncrasies. If you come up empty-handed, don’t despair. Just do what you can do.  We have found that many of our members come to yoga because of back pain.  Did you know that several of the back exercises taught by physical therapists closely resemble those taught in our yoga studios? And as it happens, a growing number of physical therapists are yoga practitioners themselves.  Many of you have asked about different books available on yoga and back care - as there are many.   Suza Francina, Mary Pullig Schatz, M.D., Patricia Walden and BKS Iyengar, have all written detailed books regarding yoga and back care. However, be careful about relying solely on books. Many of the subtleties of alignment are easy to miss—and of course, you can’t see your body the way a yoga teacher can. Please come and join one of our yoga classes today and discover another way to take care of your back!
